The Thrifty One for 51 1951 Studebaker Coca-Cola® Starlight Coupe Coca Cola Uses Moving Billboards Back before televisions were in every household and commercials in movie theaters was unthinkable, companies gave their managers cars that were billboards of logos and slogans. This 1951 Studebaker, in Coca-Cola yellow with red lettering, is a perfect example of this phenomenon. Studebaker, a major automaker at this time, ranking 9th in sales with over 246,000 cars produced. They had succeeded in making the Big 3 into the Big 4. Unfortunately, upper management never put any of the profits into plant improvement. By 1966 they were out of business.
Sharp Styling and a Revolutionary V-8 Engine This 1:24 scale replica is important, not just because of the Coca-Cola branding. The famous Which Way is it Going Raymond Loewy/Virgil Exner design was slightly muted from previous years and featured a new grille. 1-piece curved windows were also new, but for the top-of-the-line Commander series, the real news was under the hood. Although both Ford and Chevrolet try to take credit, the 232.6 cubic inch V-8 engine was truly the first small block V-8.
