Lifeguard Design Emphasizes Safety1956 Ford Fairlane Crown VictoriaAll That Glitters Is
ChromeFord executives were puzzled and unhappy in 1956. The 1955 restyling was well received and their entire line was voted Motor Trends Car of the Year for 1956. But Chevrolet still topped them in sales by over 150,000. To combat this Ford did two things. First they upped the horsepower in all their engines. Secondly, they emphasized safety with the Lifeguard Design features like padded dashboards and recessed steering wheels. The Fairlane Crown Victoria cost $2337 with the 6-cylinder engine and, in total, 9209 were made. They had so much trim one critic said, "All that glitters is not gold, it's chrome".
