The SuperStack II Switch 1100/3300 ATM expansion module takes full advantage of the ZipChip 3 ASIC's advanced capabilities. The ZipChip 3 ASIC performs the Ethernet frame-to-ATM cell conversion process known as segmentation and reassembly (SAR) in hardware for maximum throughput with minimum latency. It dynamically maps 802.1Q VLANs to ATM ELANs, thereby ensuring logical continuity across the network. Moreover, 802.1p CoS and IP Type of Service (ToS) priorities are mapped to ATM QoS parameters for end-to-end convergence in an integrated network. For example, real-time and mission-critical traffic may be assigned the highest priorities and then guaranteed appropriate bandwidth and latency characteristics for the trip across the network backbone.

Multiprotocol over ATM (MPOA) enables Layer 3 shortcuts between MPOA Clients, which bypass the potential bottlenecks and latency of conventional routers. As such, many performance-related requirements are relegated to the MPOA Clients. In addition to it's other advanced capabilities, the ZipChip 3 ASIC is optimized to handle these requirements for wire-speed Layer 3 forwarding.
