Women And the Politics of Travel, 1870-1914

To so many the roadtrip has defined place, time and identity. As did the male adventurous travelers of the time, women experiencing the world and the British empire and writing about it were not only defining how what they saw for their own purposes but also for their readership. In the case of the women the result was sometimes ambivalent, and Anderson (English, communication and cultural studies, U. of Western Australia) explores how out of that ambivalence emerged moments of negotiation that offer the possibility for a more inclusive kind of feminine performance and for other ways of narrating feminine activity in the colonial space by analyzing the works of Isabella Bird, Florence Dixie, Kate Marsden and other self-representing nineteenth-century women travelers.
