A Critical Edition of Penelope Aubin's Translation of Robert Challe's Les Illustres Francaises/the Illustrious French Lovers

Challe's novel was published anonymously in 1713 and became immediately and widely popular in France. Aubin's English translation appeared in 1727 as The Illustrious French Lovers and has not been reprinted until now. They are historically and aesthetically important texts because they played a key role in the evolution of narrative in the Age of Enlightenment on both sides of the English Channel. The new edition contributes to the belated but increasing recognition of Aubin as a major translator and a novelist in her own right, and to the rediscovery of Challe himself and his place in the late years of Louis XIV's reign.
