A comparative analysis of children's cognitive and affective learning from selected Bible story videos.

Problem. The first problem of this study was to determine the cognitive and affective scores for six through nine year olds in church-sponsored after-school programs after viewing selected Nest Family and Big Idea Bible story videos. The second problem of the study was to determine the difference in cognitive and affective scores across religious affiliations and ages for six through nine year olds, after viewing a selected Nest Family or Big Idea video. The final problem of this study was to ascertain children's opinions and outlooks on the videos. Procedures. The researcher administered a test to randomly assigned groups of children ages six through nine in the spring of 2008. Children in each group watched one of two selected videos. The children represented seven church or religious organization-sponsored after-school programs in Tarrant County, Texas. The researcher compared mean cognitive and affective scores using one-way ANOVAs to test for significant differences between viewing groups, as well as differences across age groups. The researcher compared significantly different means using Fisher's least significant difference procedure. A total of sixty-one students' tests qualified for the study. Findings and conclusions. The one-way ANOVAs revealed significant differences in cognitive scores between the control group and both the selected video viewing groups with the Nest Family and Big Idea groups scoring an average of almost 40 percent higher than the control group. The researcher found no significant differences between the Nest Family and Big Idea video groups for either cognitive or affective scores. Additionally, the ANOVAs revealed significant differences across the age groups, with both eight and nine year olds scoring significantly higher cognitive scores than the age group that included six and seven year olds.
