African Americans and the Culture of Pain

Inspired initially in 1994, after hearing a lecture by David B. Morris (author of The Culture of Pain), King (English, U. of Florida) began her exploration of issues around black bodies in pain, carrying it forward over the years and gaining impetus from work by scholars of black culture on topics such as death, dying, woundedness, trauma, and survival. She sees the topic as very broad and her own contribution as but a starting point for further research. Her study addresses how pain functions as cultural property, its value as symbolic capital, and the place of lynching in it. She also devotes attention to the release from pain in fury and purging; in art, literature, and movies; and in laughter. The notes and bibliography are extensive.
