African Environment and Development

Anthropologists, geographers, historians, and political scientists, all but one from the Netherlands or the US, explore the environment and development in Africa. They consider both topics that have received a lot of attention recently, such as community-based wildlife management in eastern and southern Africa and burning regimes in west Africa; and topics less associated with the environment and development, such as the environmental impacts of war and cash cropping. Most of the 12 studies were selected from presentations to sessions at the November 2001 annual meeting of the African Studies Association, held in Houston.
