Worthy of the Stage

Clearly Green Day shifted gears on their core audience with American Idiot, but in doing so opened up their following to a much broader fan base. It is hard to call this music accessible, addicting would be a better descriptor because it takes a few plays to get it. Once you realize the song cycle here is in the spirit of The Who, it all begins to hook you. Character development in rock is hard, but when it works it thrives. That's what Green Day has pulled off here, and that's why it is working as a musical stage piece, first work-shopped in Berkeley and now being produced for Broadway. Regardless of whether it is destined to be another Tommy, it has joined the ranks of epic abstract albums and will likely influence a new generation of garage bands who want as much thought in their tunes as distortion. The beat is steady, the guitar lines echo clean, the lyrics are compelling and memorable, the singing real. Green Day reinvented itself after an already distinguished career, and hey, it works for me. |
