How to Buy Cosmetic Puffs, Sponges & Wedges

There are several ways to apply makeup, but the most common is simply to use the fingers. However, even with clean hands, doing this spreads germs and tiny bits of dirt from the little wrinkles in the tips of your fingers across the sensitive pores on your face, causing breakouts and reducing the smooth effectiveness of makeup as oils are added to the skin. Therefore, cosmetic puffs, sponges and wedges are a very inexpensive way to avoid these problems, and they deliver an evenly blended result.
Loose face powder and compressed powders usually come with powder puffs, but long before you get to the end of the powder, the puffs have picked up a lot of dirt and oil from your skin, and they should be replaced fairly often. You can pick up multi-packs of these from Cover Girl or Rucci for less than $5 per pack to have convenient replacement puffs for whenever you need them.
eyeshadow also comes with little sponge-tipped applicators, but we know that most of these tend to fall apart rather quickly. Since these sponge brushes do an excellent job of blending color -- while they last -- it's a good idea to have a replacement pack of these on hand as well. Also, we've found that when you buy these separately, they are made to last a lot longer than the ones that come with the eyeshadow.
Foundations, on the other hand, rarely include applicators, so we're left with two main options, and we've already discussed why the fingertips aren't the best solution. Sponge wedges do an extraordinary job of smoothing and blending foundation, cream blushes and other creamy makeup, but they take a bit of practice. Also, though they can be washed, they crumble over time.
We're rather impressed with three foundation applicators we've found. The Anne Marie Borlind cosmetic sponges can be boiled to eliminate bacteria and repeatedly reused, and the larger pores and softer surface mean you won't be going back to the makeup bottle as often. If you can find them, flocked sponges are remarkably gentle to sensitive skin, and they're clean with a hot rinse and a squeeze. One of the most unusual foundation sponges is from Earthly Essentials, a dense angled sponge with a handle, which has received enthusiastic reviews from the women who use it.
