Cologne Basics - Quick Tips to Buying Great CologneBegin by deciding how much you want to spend. Most colognes that cost more will last longer on you and will go further. This means if you can splurge on the more expensive cologne in the long run you may be saving money because you won't have to purchase as often. Decide on the scent you are wanting. Do you want a scent that is sweet smelling, woodsy smelling, a clean scent, a flowery scent, or possibly something more exotic or even sexy? By knowing the exact smell or scent you are wanting, it will help narrow down your choices.
There's something about a man's cologne that can drive anyone wild! Many men have a signature scent that defines them, and whether it's cologne or an aftershave, the scent they choose says something about their personality.
Cologne is named after a city in Germany, where the first cologne was actually made in 1709 by an Italian perfume maker named Giovanni Farina. Usually, cologne refers to a men's perfume, but there are an increasing amount of women's perfumes that are colognes too, most notably Halston for women, anything by Revlon, Avon, Tommy Girl, Demeter, and others.
If you're looking for the right men's cologne, think about whether you or the person you're giving it to is the type to like clean, minimal fragrance or heavier, spicier scents. Do they want to dab it on, or do would they like it as a spray? Test it out at the department store before buying it online to make sure it's the scent you're looking for. You'll probably save at least 10% buy purchasing the cologne online too.
Do a smell test. Actually open up the tester and smell it. Do you like the scent? Is it the scent that matches what you wanted? Make sure it isn't too strong. Sample the scent, before buying. Spray some of the sample onto your wrist. Do not rub your wrists together. How does it smell right at this given moment? If you can, walk around the store a bit before purchasing the cologne. Smell your wrist again. Do you still like it?
A very popular scent among men is the Diesel Fuel for Life cologne-it's masculine without being too overpowering and is very affordable. Giorgio Armani, Burberry, and Ralph Lauren's Polo also make terrific colognes at reasonable prices. Ed Hardy's rough and rebellious image makes their cologne popular too, especially among younger men.
For a higher price point, and if you really want to splurge, try a cologne from Acqua di Parma or Hermes. You'll get high quality essential oils and images of Capri or Cote d'Azur floating wafting through your head if you wear these, and you won't need much, so it will last longer than you might think.
