Just about every culture has a unique style of basket making. In the Northeast most baskets were woven from thin, flat strips of wood called splint, which the basket makers wove over and under each other at right angles creating a distinctive, textured basket. The detailed pattern and banding of this lamp was inspired by a splint basket in the Museum collection.
