A-Line Skirts

You might think of the 1950's housewife when you see the word A-line skirt, but take that image out of your mind because the A-line skirts has been modernized by designers. Some designers keep the classic knee length of the traditional A-line skirt but remove the fullness of its older version. Other designers shorten the skirt so that it hits a little above the knee. A-line skirts scream feminine and fun. They are great to wear in the summer because most are made of cotton. They slim the waist because shirts or blouses should be tucked in exposing a slim and trim waistline. Legs look longer because of the length and fullness of the skirt. We suppose you could wear a waist apron if you really want that retro 50's look.

For printed and fun patterns, look to Jones of New York. Their A-line skirt lengths range from knee length to mid-shin length and go wonderfully with today's platform sandals. You can pair the bright prints with a solid neutral top for a slim waistline and long looking legs.

A-line skirts for fall are made with heavier fabrics and darker colors. Susan Graver makes skirts out of moleskin, velvet and denim and are a little longer in length, hitting around the mid-shin area. The heavier fabric really makes legs long because of less pleating and less flounce. Denim & Co. make a very similar style in lightweight stretch denim and moleskin.

For traveling, an A-line skirt is essential because it covers the legs to the knee, it's loose around the legs, it can be dressed up or down and the fabrics are usually light and breathable. Patagonia has perfected the modern A-line and makes them in neutral colors to match every top you bring on your adventure.

Old Navy has similar styles of A-line skirts as well as slightly shorter versions in colorful prints. They are playful and fun, great for summer.
