Sarong Skirts & Similar ChoicesA sarong is a curious garment, usually used as a skirt but also well suited as a conversion to a dress. Essentially, this is a simple rectangular piece of fabric which can be wrapped several different ways, and it's often confused with a wrap skirt for this reason. However, it rarely includes ties, instead relying on the corners of the fabric to secure it in place.
We like Michael Kors' sarong skirt for the clever gathered detail at the waist. Not a true sarong, this is actually a straight skirt with mock details that work very well, fitting nicely about the hips like a pencil skirt. Ellen Tracy does something slightly similar with the faux wrap style, sarong-inspired with a draped detail in the front and an all-over, lovely geometric print.
For something more authentic, check out Diane Gilman's embellished silk skirt with an exotic paisley print. The overlapping front panel buttons on the side, and the design is heavily accented with gold and red sequins and beads for a perfect evening piece.
Ralph Lauren doesn't bother getting close. The Limone sarong skirt in beautiful, vibrant prints is exactly as it should be, with a self-tie knot detail at the hip for a sultry, beach-ready look in luscious silk twill.
