Overview
Commentary
John Fowles's celebrated novel is a romantic fantasy in which Francis Clegg, an obscure London clerk, contrives to win the affections of Miranda Grey, a young girl whom he has worshipped from afar for years. After he wins a fortune in a football pool, Francis buys a house in the country and has Miranda kidnapped and carried there. He keeps her prisoner in the hope that she will gradually or suddenly come to love him.

Reviews
"Here is a first novel of much talent and horror, and consequently interesting promise....As a novel that is trying to make a serious moral statement and making it seriously and well, 'The Collector' deserves attention, and the more so because Mr. Fowles brings to it the proper gifts of the novelist. His storytelling transcends the difficult and limited structure he has imposed on himself....This is already a haunting and memorable book, and it will be interesting to see how it wears."

"[T]here is not a page of this first novel which does not prove that its author is a master storyteller....And he may well turn out to be a leader in the van of those who, after a long absence, will revive the fading art of fiction by bringing back to it the plain excitement of suspense."
