About Converse

In 1908, a man named Marquis Mills Converse started a rubber shoe company and factory in Malden, Massachusetts, delivering product directly to stores in Boston. In 1913, Converse started a catalog that stated they wanted to be an independent company who wouldn't follow other companies. Those profound words have stayed with the company since then. Converse started to make Converse basketball shoes, at that time a new sport.

Chuck Taylor, a fan of basketball, joined the company in the 1920's to sell sneakers and spread the word of the new sport. In the 1930's, Jack Purcell had become the world badminton champion and in 1935 gave his name to Converse for their signature badminton shoe.

During World War II, Converse started to manufacture a larger range of products for servicemen including Converse boots, apparel, and Converse jackets.

In the 1950's and the birth of rock n roll, the leather jacket, blue jeans and high-top sneakers became the rocker uniform. The Converse sneaker in high-top form became one of the most popular shoes in history. During the same time, professional basketball was growing in popularity and All Stars were made in different colors for different teams.

In 1974, All Stars got their big star on the side and was built specifically for basketball. 1976, the leather sneaker made its debut. In the years following, Converse created the Weapon sneaker that was popular among basketball players. They also remade the All Star again by replicating the Chuck Taylor for the Converse casual shoes.

Wanting to be different, their shoes caught on to the skateboarding world and Converse skateboarding shoes were born. As the brand became more and more popular, apparel started to appear in stores everywhere with Converse separates, Converse hats, Converse slip-on shoes and Converse handbags.

Converse made the way for those who see things differently and who want to make change for the better. The spirit of rebellion and basketball live on and on with Converse.
