Bielenstein (emeritus Chinese, Columbia U.) primarily deals with the exchange of missions and the goods they brought, and therefore focuses on government trade, and considers military conflicts and private trade or travelers only in passing. In cases when diplomatic missions dealt with other issues in addition to trade, he gives them full attention. These might include delineating borders, concluding peace, and exchanging technology and books; counties some distance from China, for example Afghanistan, the Middle East, India, and the islands to the south, generally did not have such issues, and negotiated only trade. He draws chiefly from the dynastic histories to discuss Chinese relations with large countries and regions, and within those sections particular places or peoples.
