Egyptian Menat Necklace
Menat necklaces were ritual implements that were held in the hands and shaken, especially in the service of the goddess Hathor, whose priestesses are commonly shown holding the emblem. When officiating as priestesses, queens and ladies-in-waiting also wore or carried them. This necklace was created for the Metropolitan Museum of Art and is inspired by an original from Egypt (Dynasty 18, ca. 1391-1353), consisting of many strands of faience and glass beads attached to a bronze counterpoise. This single strand necklace features polished white and green jade, yellow agate, carnelian, turquoise, black onyx, fluorite, jasper and amethyst. The necklace is safety knotted, has a sterling silver clasp with 24K gold overlay and measures 18'' long.
