How to Choose a Car CD Changer

A car CD changer allows you to keep multiple discs in your vehicle and switch between several albums while driving with ease. There are several styles of car CD changer from a variety of manufacturers, including Kenwood, AUDIOVOX, Sony, PIONEER, Panasonic and more. The devices have been available for over a decade, and they're an essential part of a car stereo.
Many automobile CD changers use special magazines to switch disks, which can provide extra protection for CDs and make it easy to keep several similar discs together. Crutchfield sells CD changer magazines, including magazines designed for Alpine systems. Other stores simply allow several CDs to be inserted into the system, where they're stored until they're called up by the user. Either way, the end result is the same, and there's no particular advantage to either system. If you prefer a certain type, be sure to buy a unit that matches your preference.
Car CD changers are generally packaged with automobile CD players, and rarely work as independent devices. As such, you should look for a CD changer that accomplishes everything you need, from AM/FM radio to auxiliary inputs, which are useful with iPods and other MP3 players. Multiple function CD changers are available from stores like Streetside Audio and PC Connection.
When you buy a new CD changer, make sure that it will fit into your vehicle. If it's a combination unit, make sure that you've got a car audio install kit to use with it. Installation is fairly easy; just follow the included instructions. Once your new CD changer is installed and loaded with a few albums, you'll have much more fun in your car during your daily commute or long road trips -- or any time you feel like listening to a few of your favorite tunes.
