Get a Boost: How to Choose a GPS Antenna

You're traveling on roads unknown, without a map, relying on your Garmin GPS. Should your GPS not stay locked on a signal from the internal antenna, you will wish you had your own GPS security blanket, a GPS antenna. An external GPS antenna improves the reliability of the internal antenna already in your Magellan or TomTom, providing you with a better chance of receiving a constant signal.
A GPS antenna may be mounted inside or outside a car or a boat, or used with a GPS device for hiking. Both internal and external GPS antennas may have magnetic casing for easy mounting. Exterior antennas for your GPS device are also waterproof, and boaters can find appropriate antennas at BoatersWorld.
Mounting a GPS antenna will improve the reliability of your GPS receiver. Troubleshoot interference issues with a GPS antenna. If your vehicle's windshield has heat-reflective coating the GPS receiver will work more reliably with an external GPS antenna. The external antenna will maintain a signal in areas where an internal-only device may not, including any heavily-wooded or covered areas where the GPS device does not have a clear "view" of the sky.
There are a few different types of GPS antennas including active, passive or re-radiating. An active antenna uses the GPS receiver's battery power, and may not be the best option if you are concerned about your GPS battery. The passive battery does not use your receiver's battery and has a limited cable length. The re-radiating antenna is the best option if there's no external antenna jack on your current GPS device.
When shopping for a GPS antenna, look for one that is compatible with your GPS device. There are some universal GPS antennas, while others will only work with certain brands or GPS devices and want to use regular batteries to keep it charged.
