When people think of a voice recorder, a rectangular device with a tape recorder at one end and a microphone at the other comes to mind. Those still exist, but the digital voice recorder has in many ways taken its place, bringing new features to consider.
The Coby CX R189 offers voice activation, only records when someone it talking, which saves space. It also comes with a built-in microphone and speaker for ease of use. Other models (including the Philips 9370, also available at eCost), have built-in search functions, making it simple to save and then find all your voice notes.
The Livescribe is a hybrid, acting as a pen, but as a voice recorder. Able to fit in your pocket, the Livescribe Pulse Smartpen links what you dictate with what you were writing at the time, and can read both back to you. When you need extra ink or other accessories, head to J&R Music and Computer World.
They also sell the Olympus digital recorder, the LS-10, which records WAV, WMA or MP3 onto a 2 GB built in flash drive, yet also supports SD memory cards for added storage space. It offers two built-in mics for high quality stereo recording.
If you're looking for something basic, check out your mp3 player. The Micro digital player, from Creative Zen, not only plays music, but records voice notes, as well as including a personal organizer and alarm clock. Talk about multi-tasking!
Many of the voice recorder options mentioned here have been more expensive than what would typically be considered an impulse buy, but there are cheap digital voice recorders available. XtremeMac sells an attachment for your iPod that turns it into a recorder, for less than 15 dollars (iPod not included!), or pick up a keychain that includes a digital memo recorder. There's truly something for everyone.
