Weather Alert Radios: Vital Safety Tools

The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) recommends that families keep an emergency recovery kit with a weather alert radio for safety. Weather alert radios monitor emergency bulletins including alerts about tornadoes, hurricanes, floods, snowstorms, hazardous explosions, fires and chemical spills.
Certain features are FEMA-recommended for weather alert radios. For example, weather radios must have a mobile power source such as batteries, hand-cranked or solar power. Weather alert radios must have the ability to capture emergency radio frequencies such as the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's (NOAA) weather emergency radio station. NOAA is in charge of providing emergency information into emergency areas. In an emergency, NOAA issues a tone alert informing residents of impending danger.
Most weather radios feature specific power systems, whether battery, solar or hand cranked. For battery-powered radios, FEMA recommends packing extra batteries to maintain power for longer emergency periods. New energy-saving technologies have made it possible to add additional features to weather alert radios. The Eton American Red Cross FR600 SOLARLINK weather alert radio has a completely solar-powered system that powers a flashlight, siren and cell phone charger as well.
Smaller, battery-powered weather alert radios, like the handheld Midland HH50 pocket weather alert radio and the Sangean DT-400W Weather Alert with AM/FM/NOAA reception, fit into pockets . Other models include two-way handheld systems. The Midland X-TRA TALK GMRS and Midland Outfitter Series GXT785VP3 two-way weather alert radios allow families to talk over mile-long distances.
Features vary by model, from the Midland ER102 weather alert radio with flashlight to the ultimate Oregon Scientific Public Alert Radio Station with its high-tech barometric forecaster, weather temperature gauges and clock radio. However, a vital characteristic of all weather alert radios is portability for travel in an emergency.
