Remote controls were invented for convenience but they stopped being convenient as we started collecting more devices, each with a dedicated remote control. We juggle all the clickers every time we want to watch TV or listen to music. Moreover, newer devices don't work without a remote. So if you lose a remote or just want to clear off the coffee table, buy the right universal remote control.
The key to choosing a universal remote control is matching the clicker to the number and type of devices you need to control.
If you simply need a TV VCR remote, you can get a basic controller for up to three devices. A basic RCA TV remote control is straightforward, and only has a limited number of buttons and options.
The downside is that you can't add many devices, or control every aspect of a home theater. To add an amplifier, DVD player and cable box, a Sony Universal Remote Control can handle up to eight devices.
For more control, step up to the Prestigo Philips Universal Remote Device. It has a 2.8-inch LCD touch-screen display that changes with each device, turning one universal remote control into the equivalent of several separate controllers.
