How to Choose Portable Speakers

iPods and other MP3 players typically come with headphones for shutting out the world and listening to music, but most don't come with speakers. But if you are at the beach or in a room without a stereo system you may want to take the music beyond your earbuds. For these situations, there are plenty of portable speakers. It's important to choose portable speakers that are compatible with your MP3 player and lifestyle.
First, you need to choose mini speakers that work with your MP3 player. This sounds like a no-brainer, but it may be a concern. Some devices, including several iHome models, have a dock that only connects with specific iPod models. This makes for superior sound from the iPod dock rather than the headphone jack.
However, a Zune or other device may not connect. The Podwave and similar models are more versatile, plugging into a standard headphone jack.
Second, consider the power source. If you just want to play tunes while working in the garage, look for plug-in portable speakers, such as the Bose SoundDock. You won't need to change batteries every few hours if you can just plug it into the wall.
On the other hand, if you are taking the portable speakers to the beach, you definitely want a battery-powered model.
Strike the right balance between amplification power and battery life. If you are camping, you don't necessarily need to broadcast your music to the whole campground. Look for mini speakers that last for many hours on one set of batteries. The Altec Lansing Orbit promises 24 hours of running time with three AAA batteries.
