How to Shop for a Rear-Projection Television

Although not quite as popular as plasma and flat-panel LCD TVs, rear-projection televisions are gaining in popularity because of their lower price tag. The image quality is superior to that of the traditional tube, and you'll generally get more bang for your buck. But how do you know which projection TV is right for you?
A rear-projection television is different from other types of TV projectors because the image is magnified and displayed from within the unit rather than from the front (like you would find at the movie theater). As with any television, you will want to find a model with a solid, color-rich, clear picture, which is why many consumers prefer 1080p models over their 720p counterparts.
The manufacturer also plays a part in choosing a rear-projection television. Consumers often have favorite brands when shopping for electronics, such as Samsung, Sony and JVC. However, it is best to judge each individual product on its merits, since you might discover a superior television at a lower price point than if you had gone with the name brand.
Before you buy a rear-projection television, make sure it will fit in the room it will occupy. You can mount one of these TVs on the wall, just as you would a plasma or flat-panel LCD, or you can house it in an entertainment center. Whatever the case, it is best to measure wall or furniture space before you buy the TV.
You can find rear projector televisions for under $1100, but keep in mind the longevity of your TV. If you want it to last a long time, it sometimes pays to spend a bit more up front to get a quality product that you won't have to replace a couple years down the road.
