This volume contains the proceedings of a September 2004 workshop cosponsored by the World Bank and Germany's InWEnt (Capacity Building International) in which members of the European research community contributed their perspectives on equity and development to discussions in preparation of the World Bank's annual World Development Report. Following the opening addresses, 12 papers are presented in sections dealing with definitions and characteristics of equity, historical evidence for equity-enhancing social transformation in Europe and transition countries, experience in building efficient welfare states, means of reducing international inequities, and the impact of integration on inequalities between and within Europe countries.
