Jerky Snacks

As real meat lovers know, jerky is a very specific type of meat. One of the oldest forms of meat preservation, it simply means that the meat has been dried. Typically the meat is first marinated, quite often in a spicy marinade for a spicy jerky, and then it is salted and either smoked or dried. When the process is complete the meat can be kept at room temperature and remains edible for a long time.
Although this was, at one point, a way to keep meat as necessity, jerky is now a common snack meat. It's often packaged as individual meat sticks, making them an ideal travel food. They also make great packed snacks since they don't require refrigeration. In terms of nutritional value, the process requires that all the fat is trimmed off the meat, so jerky tends to be a low fat meat product. High in protein, it's also high in sodium due to the process of preserving it.
Jerky can be made with a wide range of animal meats, including domestic and wild animals. Cow and pig meat result in beef jerky and ham jerky. In terms of poultry turkey is popularly used, and for fish jerky, salmon and tuna are commonly used to make jerky. Often though, wild animal jerky is even more popular as such meats are seen by many as an inexpensive delicacy. Deer, bison, elk, and even alligator meat has been turned into jerky. For those who enjoy a vegetarian diet, there's even soy jerky on the market that comes in a variety of meat flavors.
Jack Links is a very popular brand of jerky, and they make a wide variety of jerky meats. Another popular brand is Golden Valley Jerky, and they specialize in organic jerky.
