Selecting Hand & Pole Pruning Saws

pruning saws are a type of garden tool used for light trimming of shrubs, bushes, and branches. Typically anything that needs to be trimmed with more than an inch and a half diameter requires either a hand or pole pruning saw.
Both types of pruning saw feature either a curved or straight toothed blade. Hand held pruning saws typically feature twelve to sixteen inch blades and are ideal for sap or green wood pruning. Pole saws are simply curved or straight toothed blades fixed to long poles and intended for trimming shrubs or branches with larger diameters. Common features on the pole saw include double edged blades and often tapered noses making for easier navigation when pruning.
When selecting a pruning saw consider the task at hand. For simple pruning of smaller shrubbery, likely a simple hand held device such as those offered by Ace or any of the wide selection of Fiskars handheld saws will suffice. With double blade options, fold up features, and a wide selection of blade sizes, choosing the right pruning saw is simply a matter of necessity. Consider functionality and what the tool will be most used to do.
For thicker shrubs and small trees that require extra force, consider an electric pruning saw. Black and Decker and Remington offer several electric pruning saws in both the handheld and pole variety. While electric saws are more expensive, they're much more powerful without the strain. Again, functionality of the job at hand must be taken into account. There is no shortage of options when it comes to brands and blade size. If you're interested in a power tool, you might want to consider the purchasing a battery operated one, such as that offered by Black and Decker as it allows for greater mobility.
