Fortunately, for every task there is now a plethora of power tools on the market to simplify the job and minimize the strain. Trimming is no exception. Once done almost exclusively by manually operated lawn shears, there are now a number of power trimmers available, including the popular string line trimmers.
Line trimmers or string trimmers use a plastic line to whip off grassy overgrowth. A spinning spool head either electrically powered or gas powered whips around the plastic string easily removing excess grass and growth quickly and efficiently. This simple idea developed more than thirty years ago has revolutionized lawn maintenance in that it makes trimming incredibly fast.
Weighing in at an average of about ten pounds, most trimmers are very maneuverable. Although the gas powered trimmers are somewhat heavier in terms of weight, they're very powerful and long lasting in comparison to battery operated cordless trimmers. Electric trimmers powered by cord are a good choice for smaller plots where access to electricity by cord isn't problematic. Cordless trimmers are ideal for smaller plots with thin growth where heavy trimming isn't required. These trimmers tend to be much less powerful than the gas powered alternatives. Gas trimmers can cost between 150 and 200 dollars, which is the average price range offered by popular manufacturer Black and Decker. The same manufacturer, as well as its competitor Toro, also offers electrically powered options from upwards of about 50 dollars.
Most often, the line of a trimmer is easily replaced by simply removing the spool and either adding replacement line to the same spool or purchasing a replacement spool if necessary. New line for your trimmer is as easy to get as it is to replace. A new line of spool is often less than 10 dollars depending on the manufacturer.
