Details
Miscellaneous Recorded between 1939 & 1943. Includes liner notes by Kip Lornell.
Digitally remastered by Roger Seibel.
GO DOWN OLD HANNAH is the sixth and final volume in the series of Leadbelly's Library of Congress recordings. The recordings were made between 1939 and 1943, as Huddie "Leadbelly" Ledbetter made occasional journeys to Washington, D.C. to be preserved on tape by musicologist Alan Lomax.
Accompanied by his 12-string guitar, Leadbelly is a model of confidence and ease. Lomax can occasionally be heard asking Leadbelly a question or leading him to a certain topic or song. Leadbelly obliges with monologues that cover everything from square dances to Christmas. The set closes with his recitation of a partly sung prayer done in the manner of those he heard while growing up and going to church in the segregated South. These recordings are presented in the most simple and straightforward manner and are enduring and important documents of 20th century American music and culture.

Reviews Q (8/94, p.127) - 3 Stars - Good - "...this music has never been mined so effectively. Having so many alternative takes and monologues and so much moreish fare gathered together in one place seems like pure hedonism. Bear with it, some of this is pure heaven..."
