HERE COMES THE NIGHT, David Johansen's third solo album, was roundly dismissed as a misguided commercial sellout move upon its release in 1981. Listening with the benefit of hindsight, it's hard to agree with that sentiment. Ironically, live follow-up LIVE IT UP proved to be the record that substantially raised Johansen's media profile.

Starting from the same backwards-glancing love of '50s and '60s rock & roll that has been at the heart of Johansen's music since his New York Dolls days, HERE COMES THE NIGHT is an album of its time. Despite familiar names, the title track, "Suspicion," and "Heart of Gold" are all originals. The arrangements, played by new-rock luminaries like ex-Modern Lover Ernie Brooks, ex-Beach Boy Blondie Chaplin, and singer-songwriter Elliott Murphy, sound a bit dated now, but the songs are terrific. A live version of the title track is added to this reissue.
