If you're looking for an extra layer of comfort when you sleep -- and this could be for a variety of reasons, from an older mattress that needs replacing, but you're not ready for that expense, to a recent injury or recurring back pain -- mattress pads or pillow toppers are an excellent solution. Some of these are better than others, so we'll show you the best we've found.
Beautyrest doesn't just make excellent mattresses, they also create a wide variety of mattress pads, and you have many choices of fabrics and fills from decadently soft to ultra-firm. One of the things we really like about this brand is that they fit to your mattress as well as a fitted sheet, so you don't have to worry about elastic bands coming loose during the night.
Royal Velvet is another great choice, with up to 500 thread count Pima cotton and silk blended fabrics and gel fiberfill for luxurious sleeping comfort. As long as we're looking at alternative fabrics, consider Denali as well; their lambswool mattress pads have a long, thick pile that conforms to you as you sleep, is machine washable, and stays at an optimal temperature all year-round.
If you really need firm, even support, memory foam is the way to go. Don't settle for traditional egg-crate foam toppers here, but try to find dual-layer toppers, instead. The main layer is soft to relieve pressure points, but the thinner layer, which should be about 3/4" thick, must be firm yet very sensitive to the impressions you make when you lay down. If you can't find the dual-layer pads, we strongly recommend MemoRest and TruCell, two of the best we've found in thick, single-layer memory foam mattresses.
