We also find that laundry bags may be the best choice if you go to a laundromat, so we'll cover all three options with this little guide.
If there's only one choice, you can carry up to two loads at a time in a laundry basket. One of our favorite designs is from Rubbermaid, the hip-hugger basket with a curved side for easy balancing and sturdy handles on the other three sides. Being able to safely walk down a flight of stairs with a full laundry basket at your hip rather than in front of you is reason enough to want at least one of these excellent baskets. Rubbermaid's wheeled linen hampers are equally smart, including a large foot pedal to operate the self-closing lid.
Badger Basket has a beautiful selection of hampers in many different styles. We particularly like their three-drawer hamper, which works equally well as a storage unit for toys and other things. The warm cherry frame holds three canvas basket drawers which each hold more than a load of laundry. Burlington Basket also offers several designs in both wicker and willow weaves, and the round baskets include machine washable hamper liners.
If you'd like a hamper that adds something special to your bathroom decor, we suggest Blomus and Brabantia brushed or polished stainless steel laundry bins. Every style includes venting holes to prevent the accumulation of odors, plus flat or slightly domed lids with a feed-trough center hole to accept your dirty clothes.
As for laundry bags, we've found two distinct styles we want to feature here. The pop-up style that twists and folds to a flat disc is perfect for those without a lot of free space, and we appreciate the side pocket in the Pop & Fold bag for carrying detergent. Mesh bags will hold more than you might expect; they stretch to accommodate multiple large loads, and Honey's are color-coded to make sorting easy.
