How to Buy the Right Laundry Detergent for You

When you're shopping for laundry detergent, you will usually choose either the same brand you always use, or the lowest price you can find. However, you don't save money by washing out the colors in your clothes with a harsh detergent, and you never find out if you could have better results with a new one if you stick to your old, familiar brand. We'll cover some of the brands you know -- and a few you don't -- with our quick guide to detergents and laundry soaps.
Two of the best known brands in the business are Arm & Hammer and Procter & Gamble. While Arm & Hammer keeps to a single line of laundry detergents in liquid or powder form, Procter & Gamble carries several lines, including Tide, Cheer, Gain, Dreft, and many more. What this should tell you is that you are using essentially the same product, no matter which of these names you choose. If you like the results you get with these, you may be surprised to find that you'll do equally well with the Arm & Hammer line while spending less per bottle or box.
One of the more interesting brands we've discovered is Mrs. Meyer's, which offers concentrated detergents that can be used to clean your entire home. The scent-free varieties are particularly gentle on sensitive skin and noses, while scented types like lavender or lemon verbena use natural essential oils. Natural enzymes and a plant-derived surfactant do the hard work well without fading your dark clothes.
Caldrea is another excellent option, also omitting phosphates and other irritants while using essential oils like basil, pomelo and ginger to add fragrance to nothing more complicated than Borax and plant-derived surfactants. Although not described as a concentrated formula, numerous customer reviews confirm that a little goes a very long way.
Our last suggestion is from Earth Friendly Products, specifically their ECOS line of powder and liquid detergents. Both detergents include a built-in soy-based fabric softener yet results in a terrifically clean load of laundry. Ingredients include soap bark, chamomile, lavender, and other natural elements.
