For example, do you want the 3-tine or 4-tine salad fork?
The most traditionally designed salad fork (or lettuce fork) has a wider leftmost tine to make cutting and eating salad greens/fixings easier. It is also about the same length as the dinner fork. The more contemporary salad fork has evolved into a shorter version of the dinner fork. Sometimes, an extra dinner fork is meant to serve as a salad fork.
Although many salad forks simply look like smaller dinner forks, some salad forks may have notched (somewhat serrated, grooved or claw-like) outer tines, maybe with one of them being more pointed for shearing. The outer tines are also wider than the inner tines, similar to some of the sterling silver Strasbourg and King Richard salad forks by Pfaltzgraff.
We found a lovely premium 4-tine Florentine salad fork by Tiffany. There seems to be a much smaller selection of 3-tine salad forks, but we did find the 3-tine Old English by Oneida and a few designs at Dansk. You might want to check out the Hightower Salad Fork available at Next Day Gourmet, as well. Towle is also a very well-known name in cutlery, offering a variety of ornate styles and designs to choose from.
For a timeless classic salad fork, you might look for pieces like the Spanish Individual Salad Fork by Reed & Barton. Oneida, Boscovs, and Barrons offer a wide selection of salad forks that you can purchase as a set.
Or, you may dare to mix and match the pieces in your flatware place setting for a fun and spirited not-so-formal get-together. Bloomingdale's and Brides.com have already started a dinnerware mix and match program for their Brides-to-be registry.
