Sterling, Crystal, Stainless, wood, plastic-which should you choose for your serving spoon and fork set?
Of course sterling silver is unmatched and only gets better with age. And, crystal is gorgeous but should be considered delicate and handled with great care.
Stainless steel-it's hygienic and easy to wash. Just be careful of prolonged continuous contact with very hot foods because it does conduct heat and can scratch a pot or pan. So, it very important to make sure the serving set is of the best quality to resist to heat and rust, that's it's durable and that the pieces won't bend, break or twist easily.
Plastic-use plastic only for serving cold foods. It should be heat resistant up to at least 210 degrees C.
Wood-used for cold foods like salads, this should be blemish-free with a smooth and polished look. Since it has a tendency to swell when wet, be very careful with this, as well.
The best serving spoons and forks are of a good weight and ergonomic, comfortably conforming to the contour of your hand. Plus, the cup/head part should be reasonably capable of an ample dip. The most durable sets don't change the flavor or odor of your food.
