When deciding on the sizes and styles of your decorative flower pots and decorative planters, remember to coordinate them with the overall artfulness of your home/garden. Plants and flowers should not weigh more than two times the weight or blossom more than 1.5 times the width of their pots and planters. The planters and pots you choose should not be so large as to swallow the plants; however, they should be spacious enough so that the plants can thrive with happy roots. For instance, vegetables should be planted in pots that hold two or more gallons. Tree planters are very versatile.
Choose the materials of your planters and pots carefully. Terracotta pots give the roots good air circulation and insulation from freezing weather because terracotta is very porous; however, terracotta pots tend to dry out easily. In freezing temperatures, the soil expands and may cause the terracotta to crack.
Wood planters are good in colder weather, and they provide more insulation than terracotta. Just be sure the wood is coated with a wood preserver, a finish that is plant-proof, because wood will eventually fade and rot outdoors.
Plastic planters are easier to move around than terracotta pots, but they don't allow plants and flowers to breathe as well. In addition, their good looks deteriorate relatively faster.
