How to Buy a Dehumidifier

Is your basement too wet? Do you have allergies? Do you have water stains on your ceiling or have peeling wallpaper? If you do, you probably need a dehumidifier. Having black mold in your home can cause serious allergy and lung problems, especially in children. Using a dehumidifier will get rid of musty smells, mold, and mildew in your home and will help allergy sufferers and even prevent you from getting allergies.
Portable dehumidifiers come in many different sizes and the right one for you depends on the size of the room you wish to dehumidify. Some can sit on a table or stand and others are floor standing. Some have wheels to help make moving them around easier and they are small enough to store away when you don't need them. Just make sure you buy the right capacity for your space and temperatures in your home. General Electric, LG, Whirlpool and Kenmore all make excellent dehumidifiers and you know that they are brands that are trusted in refrigeration.
Good dehumidifiers have a frost sensor, variable fan speeds, are not very noisy, come with an air filter, have a humidistat built in and and an auto-shutoff feature when the water drainage pan gets too full. Dehumidifiers with buckets in the front are easiest to use and you can see when the water pan is getting too full. NewAir makes a front bucket dehumidifier where you can see the water level clearly. Alen, Danby and Bionaire all have front bucket dehumidifiers in different capacities and variable prices.
Sunpentown makes some nice looking dehumidifiers that won't look like an eye-sore. Some come in silver, black, grey and white to match their surroundings.
Other brands worth considering that have a wide selection are Frigidaire and Zenith. They have different capacity buckets for different sized rooms and many come with an auto defrost switch.
When choosing the right dehumidifier for you, also look for energy efficient ones that have an Energy Star. One thing is for sure, a good dehumidifier will work when you need it to and relieve your home from the buildup of moisture that causes mold and other allergy prone fungi.
