Freakwater: Janet Beveridge Bean (vocals, guitar, percussion); Catherine Irwin (vocals, guitar); Bob Egan (pedal steel & steel guitars); Dave Gay (bass).
Additional personnel: Floss (electric guitar, fiddle); Poppy Brandes (cello); Joe Tech (piano).
Recorded at Idful Music, Chicago, Illinois in May 1995.
1995's OLD PAINT continues to support Freakwater's standing as one of the finest roots country bands on the scene. Despite their name, their following (comprised largely of indie rock fans), and their label (the post-rock-oriented Thrill Jockey), Freakwater create traditional, beautifully crafted old world country that--if not for the detail-rich, pristine production--could have been made in the 1940s or '50s.
OLD PAINT demonstrates all of these qualities in spades. Lilting vocals, lush harmonies, and softly strummed acoustic guitars are the primary ingredients, with additional instrumentation adding subtle color here and there. The spare, intimate vibe puts the focus squarely on the songs and the performances, both of which stand up to repeated listening.

Q (1/96, p.126) - 4 Stars - Excellent - "...[they] have that beautiful Carter [Family] twang and tone. The difference is Freakwater's modern day setting, advanced recording techniques and the poignancy of their Americana lyrics..."
Alternative Press (12/95, p.83) - "...The songs on OLD PAINT are the slow and burning trials of the human spirit, from undying love to restless search....Freakwater are understated only in a superficial manner. Bob Gay's bass and the occasional use of Bob Egan's pedal steel fill out the sound with poetic touches."
