Outcomes for teen parents: A within and cross case analysis.
This investigation is a follow-up study conducted by Gerken and colleagues in the late 1980s and early 1990s that examined the functioning of 70 teen parents. This study examined the long-term outcomes of the 7 original teen parents and their oldest child. This study examined the functioning of the former teen parents in these areas: health, education, employment and socioeconomic functioning, social support, mental health, life goals and satisfaction, and child's health and development. The parents' functioning as teens was compared to their functioning in 2008. This study also examined the functioning of the teen parent's oldest child in these areas: health, education and development, employment and socioeconomic functioning, social support, and mental health functioning. An interpretive multiple case study approach was used. Semi-structured interviews were conducted and mental health data were gathered via the Symptoms Checklist 90 Revised.;Seven teen parents and 6 children described their health positively. Six parents were satisfied with their education. Four children were not in school. Six parents and 4 children were employed. Although 6 parents indicated satisfaction with their financial situations, 6 expressed worries about money. Five children expressed worries about money. Six parents had met their goals and 6 reported being satisfied with their lives.;Relative to social support, although 5 parents reported being satisfied with their friendships and 4 parents indicated overall positive relationships with their parents, no parent was in a relationship with the father of their oldest child and 6 had divorced. Six children were not raised by both biological parents. Four children reported a positive relationship with their mothers while 3 had a positive relationship with their fathers. Four indicated dissatisfaction with friendships.
