This work provides a chronological documentary history of the formation of British policy, from the Balfour declaration of 1917--which added the contradictory promise of sympathy for the Zionist cause to that of the British promise of independence to the Arabs in appreciation of their struggles against the Ottoman Empire and the promise to the French for separate spheres of interest as embodied in the Sykes-Picot agreement--to the establishment of the British Mandate in 1922.
