Paul's Boutique

Overview
Commentary
Released in 1989 by the Beastie Boys, PAUL'S BOUTIQUE was a funky, polymorphous rap record whose innovative sampling took music in new directions that led directly to the commercial breakthrough of ILL COMMUNICATION and the aural collages of Beck's ODELAY. It seemed to come from nowhere; not surprisingly, it sold poorly. Dan Leroy offers as indispensible tour through PAUL'S BOUTIQUE, shedding new light on its production through original interviews with Mike D, producers Mike Simpson and John King, and "the lost Dust Brother" Matt Dike (an unjustly ignored contributor to the album). Throughout, Leroy ably conjures up the cramped L.A. apartments where the album was recorded, and the Beasties at their most immature--launching eggs out of a four-star hotels, and burning through Capitol Records money--while also paradoxically making the album that would give them new artistic respectability.
