Prairie Township is one of twenty-five townships in Hancock County, Illinois, USA. As of the 2000 census, its population was 385. It was formed from Montebello and Carthage townships on September 12, 1854. According to the United States Census Bureau, Prairie Township covers an area of 33.16 square miles (85.88 square kilometers); of this, 33.13 square miles (85.8 square kilometers, 99.91 percent) is land and 0.03 square miles (0.08 square kilometers, 0.09 percent) is water. Hancock County is a county located in the U.S. state of Illinois. As of 2000, the population was 20,121. Its county seat is Carthage, Illinois. Hamilton is the largest city in Hancock County, with Carthage being the second largest. The county is made up of rural towns with many farmers. Hancock County was part of the "Military Tract" set aside by Congress to reward veterans of the War of 1812. Actual settlement of the interior of the County was delayed by concerns about hostile American Indians.
