Run Overview Commentary Anne Patchett follows up her bestselling BEL CANTO with a sprawling tale of a large, diverse Boston family. Bernard Doyle, a former mayor, and his wife Bernadette have one child of their own and also adopt two black children, Teddy and Tip. Bernadette dies when the children are young, and later another child enters the family: Kenya, the daughter of a woman who sacrificed herself to save Tip. With four children of different races and classes under one roof, the novel becomes a wonderful and subtly miraculous tale of family, identity, and compassion. As always, Patchett excels at capturing those rare moments of grace when people from very different worlds suddenly find the ability to see each other face to face.
Publisher's Notes Struggling with single parenthood and a scandal that cost him his political career, Bernard Doyle fights his disappointment with his adopted sons' career choices before a violent event forces the members of his family to reconsider their priorities. By the author of Bel Canto. (General Fiction)
Reviews "RUN is a novel with timeless concerns at its heart--class and belonging, parenthood and love--and if it wears its heart on its sleeve, it does so with confidence. And so it should: the book is lovely to read and is satisfyingly bold in its attempt to say something patient and true about family."
Andrew O'Hagan
"[RUN] shimmers with its author's rarefied eloquence, and with the deep resonance of her insights."
Janet Maslin
"Both very sweet and very smart."

Pros: Thought provoking story about the real meaning of family.
Cons: Final chapters a little mundane; some questions better left unanswered!
The Bottom Line: The characters are the story in this novel, and the history of the statue is worth the price of admission. A very good depiction of Bostonian/liberal/Irish conflicts.
Review: This novel is subtle but very affecting, and paints a glorious portrait of a little girl who has to

Pros: not the worst book I've read
Cons: Contrived and forced
The Bottom Line: Ann Patchett is a gifted writer, but this is not her best book. Skip this one and read "Truth and Beauty" or "The Patron Saint of Liars" instead.
Review: Lately Im finding myself disappointed in the works of some of my favorite authors. I buy a new book
