How to Choose Aerobics Shoes

The key to a good aerobics shoe is proper cushioning and shock absorption, plus a proper amount of stability. These need to be flatter than running shoes so the drop of the foot lands evenly across the bottom, which better distributes the impact. Other things to look for are a high "toe box", which means the tops of the toes will not rub or catch against the shoe. Basically, start with fitness shoes and seek a low heel, or choose an actual aerobic shoe, never running nor cross-training shoes which don't offer exactly the right stability and support.
Avia offers a nice selection of shoes for this purpose; check out the iShape and iTone styles for a very good start. There's no space between the heel and the sole, and the bottom of the foot is designed for side-to-side evenness, so it's perfectly stable. New Balance makes your choices easy with several aerobics shoes in a variety of styles and colors. Remember to choose a stable, even base, but rest assured that all of their aerobic styles offer excellent ankle support.
Nike has been developing aerobics shoes for a long time, but we can help you narrow down the wide variety of styles available for the safety of your feet. For example, we highly recommend either the Musique, the Air Miler, or the Zoom Fly, all of which have low heels with excellent arch support and high toe boxes. Ryka offers several great options as well, including the Studio D, a very cool-looking shoe with a perfect impact point under the ball of the foot.
Reebok also makes it easy to choose a high quality aerobics shoe, using Lo or Low in each style, such as the women's Freestyle Low or the men's Ex-O-Fit Lo, both of which offer exceptional traction, a smooth shell across the top of the foot, and very comfortable, supportive linings. Finally, check out Skechers for their Electric fitness shoes. You may be drawn to their Shape-Ups, which do have a flat sole, but the heel is higher than it should be for aerobic exercise, so try the Electric for complete stability.
