How to Buy Baseball Shoes

Baseball shoes basically come in two different types -- those with the classic long, wide cleats and those with a shorter, more dense layer of cleats. You'll find little advantage between one style and the other for traction depending on the surface conditions, but the nature of the larger cleats is that in most cases, they're reinforced with steel, so they tend to last a lot longer, although depending on the way the shoe has been designed inside, they may not be as comfortable as the softer, shorter cleats.
Both Under Armour and Nike offer several variations of the short and dense baseball cleats, including Under Armour's Twill Bill, which is available in either cleat style. The cleats are all rubber, so they're still very durable, and since they're made in a single form with the rest of the sole, you won't find cleats breaking off. CTG Athletics has the Vistoso Turf II shoes for turf play, in which the cleats are arranged in a tripod pattern for maximum grip. As you can see from these styles, the best use of the shorter, denser cleats is for turf surfaces rather than grass.
If you're playing on a natural grass or dirt field, we do recommend the depth of traction you get with the old-fashioned cleat style, like Rawlings' Phoenix or Wizard. The Phoenix is a molded set of cleats in a metal frame that is distributed across the bottom fo the foot for great balance and more comfort, while the Wizard uses both metal and plastic cleats for speed and traction.
Mizuno carries a good mix of both varieties, so keep in mind the tips mentioned earlier for which cleat style works best. We really like the arch support and ankle padding on Mizuno athletic shoes, and we appreciate the flexibility provided by top quality full-grain leather which is stitched in layers across and around the shoe. New Balance is also a great choice, particularly since your weight is well-distributed across the base of this lower-heeled shoe, and the traction pattern plus a rigid mid-foot offers excellent stability.
