Selecting Cycling Shoes For Your Needs

Cycling shoes are designed with stiffer soles than regular athletic shoes in order to provide more efficient energy transfer while pedaling. These soles also protect the feet and provide support for the full length of the foot in order to reduce cramping and fatigue. Cycling shoes are used with compatible pedals, which will securely hold the feet using a 2-hole cleat system, 3-hole cleat system or a clipless shoe-pedal system. By securing the feet to the pedal a minimal amount of pedaling energy is lost.
Although a light hiking shoe or an outdoor cross-training shoe can be used for cycling, they do not have the stiffness needed in the sole nor are they compatible with clipless pedal systems. Instead they need platform pedals fitted with toe clips or straps.
Road cycling shoes have exceptionally stiff soles that facilitate power transfer to the pedals. Because of the stiff soles, these cycling shoes do not have any traction and are extremely uncomfortable to walk in for long distances. These road cycling shoes offer good ventilation since they are of lightweight construction. Carbon fiber can be used to make the sole even stiffer and enable the shoe to fit customized cleat systems. Road cycling shoes are manufactured by Shimano, Sidi, Keen and Pearl Izumi.
Mountain biking shoes offer a stiff enough sole for efficient pedaling with the versatility of enough flex in the sole and a rubber lug outsole allowing for traction on slick or rugged trails while walking. Lacing or hook-and-loop strap systems adjust the fit of the shoes as well as protection for your toes. Higher priced shoes offer more enhancements and features. Several stores offer a variety of cycling shoes.
Cycling shoes should be comfortable with enough room to wiggle the toes slightly. The arch should be supported and snug with no wiggle room about the heel. Cycling shoes are not broken in, but should be comfortable from the start.
