How to Buy Running & Track ShoesYou and your feet deserve the best, and it is worth whatever time and attention to details that it takes to get the right fit in your running shoes.
Running Activities Many high quality running shoes have more cushioning, stability and comfort than any other type of shoe. Since they are designed for linear running, they should not be used for the more lateral sports like racquetball, soccer or basketball.
Your running shoes and jogging shoes are normally wider than your street shoes, to allow for swelling which occurs when running, even if just because of the lacing. Just make sure your shoe doesn't fit too loosely because blisters can result. Street running shoes are generally soft and flexible. Puma and Adidas have great street running shoes for the whole family.
Distance running shoes have fewer spikes than sprinting shoes, and they have more heel support. They have no distinct toe lift (taper) from the ground. Marathon runners tend to prefer the flat, lightweight running shoe for cushioning and speed. Mid distance running shoes are track shoes with spikes that are lightweight, no thick heel, to encourage running on your toes (with heel to toe pushing) for speed, especially for sprinters.Middle distance runners (good for hurdlers) have medium length spikes as well as a small heel and some cushioning support. You'll find a wide variety of distance running shoes among the established brands, such as Adidas, Saucony, Brooks, Nike, and New Balance.

Types of track shoes: For track shoes that you want to increase traction on the field, track spiked shoes, lightweight with spikes screwed or permanently set into the bottom of shoe (spike plate), can be found at Brooks, Mizuno, and Asics.
Sprint track shoes have stiffer spike plates and are as lightweight as possible to increase speed and distance. They usually have a recognizable taper. Some hurdlers prefer this shoe. Check out Adidas, Saucony, Reebok and Timberland for men, and Asics for women Sprint track shoes have thicker heels and are curved up at the toes for toe running. They afford good midsoles and shock absorption for your feet. Sprint track shoes have stiffer spike plates and are as lightweight as possible to increase speed and distance. Running Shoes by the Arch If you have flat or pronated feet (low arches) motion control running shoes are best so that the outsides of your feet touch the ground first. This causes the ankle to keep the feet moving outward instead of going inward (or becoming over-pronated). Maximum support should be on the inside of the foot. The top brands, like New Balance, Etonic, and Nike have a nice selection.
