First, your softball shoes should be made of high quality materials, preferably leather or leather blend, in either low-top softball styles (preferred by some center fielders) or mid- to high-top styles (for some first-basemen, infielders, and those with weak ankles). Low- to mid-top shoes also provide good support when weight is a concern.
The fit should be the most comfortable you can find with about a finger space from the inside shoe tip to the big toe. Buy a brand that has a softball-oriented line. You might start your search with Mizuno, Adidas, Nike or New Balance.
Second, your softball shoes should have a somewhat firm bend (but not be stiff). They should have good grip and traction as well as lightweight, cushioned comfort, and overall support. Shock resistance should be featured in the forefeet and heels of your softball cleats. Try Nike and Under Armour.
Third, choose smooth, rubber or molded plastic cleats for the outfielder position or little league softball; and, there are raised patterns available, not studs, for turf shoes. Choose hard rubber, molded plastic cleats or metal cleats for harder outdoor fields and artificial turfs, like high school, college and professional fields. High quality trainer shoes could also be worn well on hard ground. Mizuno, New Balance, Nike and Adidas offer interchangeable cleats that you can screw on or off and replace.
Fourth, the balance, control and flexibility in your softball shoes should be engineered for the best support of your running, batting and throwing movements as well as traction over dirt and grass fields. Mizuno and Adidas carry water-proof softball cleats, attractive to many outfielders. Lastly, the stitching in your softball shoes should be solid so that the shoes can support at least six times your body weight.
