How to Buy Walking Shoes for Fitness

When buying a pair of walking shoes for fitness, think of walking as very cool running, from heel to toe, to stress the importance of making sure that your new walking shoes are lightweight and that they perform their best for you and the shape of your feet.
Many companies that specialize in athletic shoes have put more research efforts into running shoes than into technology for walking shoes. So, check for this before you buy because most of the walking shoes you see advertised are not designed for all-around exercise walking; they are more for on-the-job toning and around the house walking, not fitness walking.
You could even say that, although generally, running shoes are not the best for walking, some walking shoes which feature high-quality running shoes technology and just the right shock absorption, are better than your average walking shoes. Try the New Balance Spira Del Sol line.
Many high-quality sport walking shoes have the features of the best running shoes - they are lightweight, flat and flexible. Buy from a well-established, trusted brand. Some versions of New Balance walking shoes have a very good reputation, and they have features that correct gait, especially for walkers with narrow heels and for folks weighing more than 180 pounds. Also, try the men's and women's walking shoes by Brooks.
Heavy persons whose feet go inward when walking and other over-pronators could benefit from motion control walking shoes, such as the lines by New Balance.
Your walking shoes should be breathable and very flexible (to twist with ease); and, they should be bendable at the balls of your feet. If you can slightly rock your walking shoes at the toe tips, then they are probably very good. Avoid high-cut Achilles padding.
There should be room in the toe areas to flex your feet upward in your walking shoes. The heels should be one inch (or less) thicker than the forefoot or balls of the shoes or even somewhat undercut for some folks. Avoid walking shoes with flared soles. Try the New Balance and Reebok lines of walking shoes for either regular walking or distance or marathon training.
The soles of the walking shoes that a race walker (power walker or go-fast walker) should buy are flat, very lightweight, tapered and moderately cushioned for stable, motion control (though not as much as that in a running shoe). Try the New Balance line of walking shoes for either regular walking or trainer walking. Check out Nike, Skechers, and Asics.
Try Adidas walking shoes for lightweight performance trainers, for all-around walking shoes and light motion control. For long distance walking, get heel and toe cushioned soles. For a middle weight person who needs stability and flexibility more than motion control, a stability shoe with a thicker heel may perform best. Be sure to research the most updated lines in each brand you try.
